Chefs of Kansai explores the lives and stories of the people behind the kitchens of Japan’s Kansai region. Paul Tanahashi and Tokyo-based Akiumi Okabe are developing the project through photography and personal narratives, exploring the experiences, relationships and daily commitments that shape a life around cooking.
Bringing together photography and personal narratives, Chefs of Kansai considers how a life takes shape around cooking. It follows the experiences, relationships and daily commitments that give each person’s work its particular character. A kitchen holds traces of the people who spend their lives there: the arrangement of familiar tools, gestures refined through repetition, the preparations that begin long before guests arrive. These details offer a way into larger stories about learning, responsibility and the satisfaction of making something for others.
